Tenerife is the largest of the seven islands that make up the Canary Islands and it is to Tenerife that the first tourists flocked, closely followed by those looking for a permanent or holiday home in the sun. The island is one of contrasts: the hot dry south is very different from the lush, green north and quiet villages co-exist with each other and have long been busy tourist destinations. Many fiestas are held throughout the year. Tenerife has a fascinating history and fantastic climate, Tenerife is definitely a hot spot in more ways than one. |

Visitors to Tenerife are never short of something to do! The island is not large and good roads and clear signposting make getting around it a piece of cake. The south of the island, which incorporates Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos, has some great beaches and water sports abound with windsurfing, wet bikes, sailing, water skiing, deep sea fishing and scuba diving. Boat trips can whisk you off to visit scenic spots around the island’s often spectacular coastline such as the amazing cliffs of Los Gigantes or to see the pods of whales and dolphins that have made the warm waters off Tenerife’s southern coast their home. If you wish to be more energetic, there are hundreds of hiking trails throughout the island’s many parks – among them the Las Canadas del Teide, home to the huge volcano that dominates the island. Touring the island either on two wheels or four makes for great sightseeing and if you don’t feel like going it alone, there are many organised outings such as jeep safaris, quad bike adventures and downhill biking. |
For the culture vultures, the island is rich in history with beautiful old buildings and churches gracing the old towns of La Oratava and La Laguna and a fair share of museums located throughout the island. Golf lovers won’t be disappointed, with no fewer than six courses operating around the island ( five within 15km of each other) and other plans for more in the future already afoot. For the little ones, there are animal parks such as the fabulous Loro Park near Puerto de la Cruz and for more permanent residents international schools cater for all ages. Last but definitely not least is the island’s nightlife: whether you want to dance ‘till the sun comes up in modern discos, sing your heart out at Karaoke, play a quiet game of bridge or take in a show, the island has it all and more! If you are a lover of fine food, the islands will certainly not disappoint. The local Canarian cusine is delicious with its papas arugadas ( salty potatoes in their skins) and spicey mojo sauces; delicious seafood and traditional game stews. International dishes from all over the globe can also be found in many of the busier places around the island. |

The south coast of Tenerife is by far the most popular location for foreign property buyers and the increase in golf courses on the island is giving the dry south a greener vista. The island’s northern areas have also proved a popular choice for many, along with the tranquil interior where time seems to have stood still and little has changed for years. |

Weather: Tenerife features the lowest temperature difference between summer and winter for virtually anywhere in the world. Our weather occasionally includes rain, but there is no specific rainy season. Air conditioning is quite rare, with overhead fans usually providing sufficient air movement to stay cool, even during the height of summer. The minimum and maximum annual average air temperatures in Tenerife are about 15C in winter and 24C in summer. We thus enjoy wonderful weather in one of the worlds best and most delightful climates The Island offers a surprising variety of micro-climatic weather zones, enabling people to almost choose their climate, depending on where you live. The Trade winds, together with the refreshing Gulf air currents, are the major weather factors that contribute to Tenerifes climate. The great altitude of Mount Teide gets up to three months of snow - yet it is still possible to enjoy a swim on the beach within an hours ride. The coastal areas enjoy the most sunshine, the best weather, the least clouds and higher temperatures. |
Economy: With some of the worlds best weather, the Tenerife economy is dominated by Tourism. The Canary Islands are within easy reach for Europe, only a 4 hour flight from most European countries. With its superb winter climate, Tenerife will always remain a popular destination. The other warm weather industries include Banana and other Agricultural exports and newly emerging service industries serving the rapidly growing resident population. The formation of special Offshore Zones, (ZEC Zones) which feature a Corporate Tax rate of only 1%, is now almost complete. Living costs - most things considered bad for us, cigarettes, alcohol, red meat, etc, are usually far cheaper in Tenerife than most other European countries, but the overall cost of living is high. Salaries and pensions on the other hand, are the lowest in Spain. Property prices, as one would expect in one of Europes most popular resorts, are also extremely high. |
